Every body of water across the country has become he paddle boarder’s playground over the last decade. With a boom in outdoor activities, and new interests in versatile sports, stand up paddle boarding or SUP is a great exercise and way to get out for adventure. As an activity for the whole family, and suitable for people of any skill level, investing in a paddle board for the summer opens up the open water for exploring!
The Red Paddle Company was founded in 2008, revolutionising the SUP industry by creating designs for inflatable paddle boards, rather than the bulky carbon fibre models of the previous few years. Red Paddle believe that riding an inflatable board shouldn’t be a compromise in either design or quality, and that their boards deliver the best authentic paddleboard experience to their users. More stiff and durable than the competition, and utilizing innovative materials and pioneering manufacturing processes, Red Paddle Company boards are tested rigorously. With a background in professional water sports, Red Paddle take on expert knowledge and aim to produce high quality, high performance products to take you wherever you want to go.
We asked Tiso Ambassador, avid water sports fan, expedition kayaker, explorer in residence for the Royal Scottish Geographical Society and Founder of The Polar Academy, Craig Mathieson to test the 10’ 6” Red Paddle Board up at Loch Morlich near Aviemore.

Taking standard inflatable technology and redesigning almost every aspect helps the Red Paddle Company to deliver a superior paddle board for anyone from beginners to experts. The 10’ 6” board comes with a host of extras including the strong and durable backpack carrying case, titan pump, repair kit and a free water resistant phone case, as well as being packed full of the latest technological developments including a Monocoque Structural Laminate (MSL) structure, a dual cylinder pump, Tec Air technology and iFin fin system.
Monocque Structural Laminate (MSL)
By coating the inner thread structure with a layer of adhesive that has been specially formulated to create both a seal and bonding layer, the redundant process of coating threads in PVC is removed from Red Paddle Company’s manufacturing process. A layer of machine laminated high density structural PVC is then applied to this adhesive layer, removing the human factor in traditional double layer application. Using Monocque Structural Laminate (MSL) allows for an industry leading smooth and blemish free cosmetic finish. The boards weigh up to 2kg less than previous, more traditional double layer boards, while remaining stiffer at lower pressure with stability and a reassuring lightweight feel and less time pumping and more time for adventure on the water!
Dual Cylinder Titan Pump
The Dual Cylinder system of the Titan pump combined with the Hi Flo handle means you are in complete control of the time and energy required to inflate your board. It puts the volume into your board faster and reduces the effort required to reach a higher pressure. A revolution in pumping technology!
No section of the design process has been ignored by Red Paddle Company. Tec Air refers to the best design processes for the best performance. Attention to detail on the inside ensures the best overall product and it all starts with materials. A machine woven inner core is covered in the MSL material, after which the deck pad, fins and other parts are attached to the outer layer. Where all the layers meet, and air pressure is at the highest, Red Paddle have applied 3 layers of taping to protect the rail. Nose and tail rockers help to provide an authentic feel to the users.
The Red Paddle Company have tested every system currently available on the market and even developed fin systems of thier own to find the best solution. Nothing comes close to the tried and tested iFin system on the all-round boards. No tools, replacements or spares are needed for the iFin system, making it a revolution for the paddle board industry!
As a seasoned expedition sea kayaker and canoeist, I must admit I was always a bit sceptical of paddle boards. However, when asked by Tiso, the outdoor adventure specialist, to give the Red Paddle Ride 10’ 6” model a test I was very happy to put it through its paces.
I don’t mind admitting that after the test I am now totally hooked on this bit of kit. The Ride 10’ 6” SUP is one of many different levels of paddle boards supplied by Red Paddle, everything from beginner boards through to racing and even expedition board.
As an owner of many kayaks and canoes, having a SUP board which all fits into a small well-made bag is great, making it easy for anyone to stow with ease. For this test, I threw it in the back of my truck and headed up to Loch Morlich, near Aviemore. It took me about 5 minutes to pump it up to the recommended psi (pressure). This is made very easy with the fantastic pump supplied. Once pumped up, I was astonished by how rigid the board was, combined with the 3 small fins I knew this was going to be a very stable craft. Even though I have been paddling for many years, even a complete novice could get the handle of the Ride very quickly. It’s extremely stable and instantly gives you the confidence to just relax and have fun. Manoeuvring feels effortless and with the standard paddle supplied, you will have no problem keeping a straight course. It wasn’t long before I was happy to start taking photographs from the board and practicing some more technical manoeuvres.
With most kit reviews I tend to list the pro’s and con’s; however, if this board is used for what it is designed for, there are no con’s. Beginners through to intermediate paddlers will love this piece of kit. In fact, I turned my back for 2 minutes to find my 14 year old son had jumped on the board, never having been on one before, he was speeding effortlessly up the loch. Any family would have a lot of fun with one of these this Summer.
The great thing is these boards can be hired from Tiso Outdoor Experience stores in Glasgow, Aberdeen and Inverness, so you can essentially try before you buy. Of course, you can opt to buy from Aberdeen, Glasgow & Inverness Outdoor Experience stores and online. If you’re heading out there for any water based adventure this summer, then make sure you share your photos and stories with #MyTiso.
